Next year’s highly anticipated international baseball game between the LA Dodgers and the Arizona Diamondbacks will be held at the Sydney Cricket Ground in March, and will mark the opening of the 2014 major league baseball season. As ticket sales continue apace, the opening series is the first time that Australia has held a competitive US baseball fixture. With thousands of interstate and overseas visitors expected to come to Sydney for the event, the series will inject an anticipated AU$13 million into the New South Wales economy.
This will come off the back of what will be a bumper start to the year for Sydney’s tourism. With major draw card events such as the Australian Open of Surfing, Opera in the Harbour, Sydney Mardi Gras and the Sydney Biennale happening in the days and weeks leading up to the MLB season opening, the investment made by the local tourism chiefs in securing these events will no doubt prove to be money well spent.
