After the EHF Champions League Final 4 in Cologne, which closed the 2013/2014 Handball Champions League season, Repucom analyzed the social media activities around one of Handball´s biggest events on Facebook and Twitter.
FC Barcelona was able to gain the highest number of total fans during the last weekend (35,631), while the other three teams were able to gain 1,920 (THW Kiel), 2,568 (MKB Veszprem) and 5,571 (SG Flensburg-Handewitt).
The surprise winner SG Flensburg-Handewitt, who kicked out tournament favorite FC Barcelona in a dramatic semifinal and beat German champions THW Kiel in the final were able to boost their awareness and popularity which is shown in the 5,571 new Facebook fans they gained – meaning an increase of more than 12% in only four days. For Flensburg, the weekend was a success both on the court and on social media.
There was also a lot of traffic on the teams’ Facebook pages. MKB-MVM Veszprem received a lot of likes (more than 88,000) and comments for their 68 posts. SG Flensburg-Handewitt was also very active with 62 posts and gained more than 57,000 Likes as a result. FC Barcelona (FCB) on the other side, was not active during the whole weekend. There was almost no content (two posts in four days) and only a small number of likes (5,502) and interactions compared to the other Final 4 participants. On the other hand, FCB Handbol was very active on Twitter with 133 Tweets during the weekend.
Another result of Repucom´s analysis shows that Facebook is a more popular social media for Handball teams and fans than Twitter. All four teams have small numbers of followers compared to their Facebook Fans. Barcelona is leading the four teams with more than 200,000 followers , while THW Kiel ranks 2nd with more than 11,000 and MKB-MVM Veszprem and SG Flensburg-Handewitt having slightly more than 2,000 followers.
